Low-pressure sparks heavy rainfall in Odisha; Phulbani records highest 224.4 mm rainfall in 24 hours

Bhubaneswar, July 5: Heavy rain triggered by a low-pressure system continued to batter Odisha, disrupting normal life with waterlogging and communication snags in several areas with Phulbani recording the highest 224.4 mm rainfall during the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 AM today.

While Bhubaneswar received 119.4 mm rainfall during the last 24 hours, Titlilagarh recorded 205.4 mm rainfall during the past 24 hours followed by Nuapada 196.0 mm, Kendrapada 176.0 mm, Koraput 127.2 mm, Kataka 124.8 mm, Boudh 116.0 mm, Khordha 81.0 mm, Nayagarh 79.0 mm and Jagatsinghpur 76.3 mm.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall for Sambalpur, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, Kalahandi, Bargarh and Nuapada districts in the next two days.

Similarly, orange and yellow warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall was issued for six districts on Sunday and yellow warning of heavy rainfall would continue in 11 more districts for Sunday.

According to IMD scientist Umashankar Das, the well-marked low pressure over Bay of Bengal is likely to concentrate during the next six hours and move west-northwestwards across north Odisha and north Chhattisgarh during the next two days.

In wake of IMD’s warning, the State Government directed all districts under red, orange and yellow warnings to keep administrative machinery fully prepared to respond to any eventuality.

The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) is continuously monitoring the situation in close coordination with district administrations and all concerned departments. As of now, the overall situation in the state remains normal, and the govt is prepared to respond promptly to any weather-related emergency, said a State Government release.
