French football giants march into World Cup knockout rounds
Les Bleus secured their spot in the round of 32 after defeating Iraq three nil in a storm-disrupted Group I encounter at the Philadelphia Stadium. Striker Kylian Mbappe celebrated his 100th international appearance by netting a crucial brace, which pushed his career tournament tally to 16 goals. This milestone draws the French captain level with German legend Miroslav Klose on the all-time scoring list. Historically, the French national team has excelled on North American soil, having previously reached the semi-finals during the 1986 tournament in Mexico.
Opening the score sheet in the 14th minute, Mbappe struck a fierce left-footed shot after combining smoothly with Michael Olise. Torrential rain and lightning then forced officials to suspend play for nearly two hours. Once action resumed, a defensive breakdown from Iraqi defender Rebin Sulaka and goalkeeper Ahmed Basil allowed Ousmane Dembele to intercept the ball. Dembele quickly assisted Mbappe for an easy tap-in. Dembele later added a third goal in the 66th minute, firing a low right-footed strike into the bottom corner to complete the victory.
