New Delhi, April 8: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday clarified his recent controversial remarks where he referred to the people of Gujarat as "illiterate." Expressing regret, he emphasized his deep respect for the people of the state.
In a statement posted on X, Kharge explained, "Certain remarks made during a recent election speech in Kerala have been intentionally misinterpreted. I offer my heartfelt apology." He continued, "It was never my intention to offend the people of Gujarat, who I have always held in the highest regard and will continue to do so."
Kharge's remarks, made during his campaign for Kerala's Assembly elections on Sunday, had triggered a controversy.
He had criticized the people of Gujarat, calling them "illiterate" and accusing them of being "misled" by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
