Conditions for Peace
Masoud Pezeshkian communicated Tehran’s willingness to halt military operations against US and Israeli forces during a critical phone call with European Council President Antonio Costa. Pezeshkian insisted that any permanent cessation of hostilities requires ironclad guarantees to ensure no future strikes occur on Iranian soil. This diplomatic overture signals a potential shift in regional dynamics if Western powers can facilitate verifiable security protocols.
Tehran maintains that its recent military actions served as a necessary defence of national sovereignty rather than an attempt to provoke wider instability. Pezeshkian clarified that while Iran respects neighboring borders, the presence of US military assets used for strikes against the Islamic Republic forced a kinetic response. He criticized regional neighbors for failing to prevent their territories from being utilized as launchpads for foreign aggression.
Historically, Iran’s relationship with the European Union has fluctuated based on the bloc's ability to remain independent of Washington's foreign policy objectives. Pezeshkian urged the EU to abandon "destructive" stances and instead adopt policies rooted in international law.
Antonio Costa reportedly distanced the European Union from the military offensive against Iran, labeling such actions a violation of global regulations. The European Council President emphasised that de-escalation remains the only path to avoid further economic and political fallout. Both leaders agreed that moving toward professional interaction over confrontation is vital for global stability.
