Bhubaneswar, July 23: The inmate population at the Biju Patnaik Open-Air Ashram in Jamujhari has increased to 40, following the transfer of 21 prisoners from different jails across Odisha last week. Earlier, the facility had only 19 inmates.

Established in 2003, the open-air prison was later named the Biju Patnaik Open-Air Ashram in recognition of its historical connection with surrendered dacoits from the Nayagarh region. The dacoits had surrendered before then Chief Minister Biju Patnaik and were accommodated at the under-construction prison facility. After their cases were reviewed, they were rehabilitated in their respective districts.

The prison witnessed significant activity in 2006, when over 100 inmates were engaged in various livelihood programmes, including vegetable farming, cattle rearing, handloom weaving with 20 looms, and brick manufacturing. Inmates also participated in cultural programmes such as Dussehra celebrations and Ravana Podi. Vegetables produced by the inmates were sold near the prison gate, benefiting residents of nearby villages with access to fresh vegetables and milk.

However, over the years, the inmate population gradually declined due to alleged indiscipline among some staff members and a shift towards stricter measures in dealing with prisoners.

The situation has reportedly improved after the appointment of a new Superintendent by the Prison Department. Officials are hopeful that the facility will once again regain its earlier momentum, with activities such as vegetable cultivation, tree plantation, cattle care, and handloom work being carried out regularly.

The Jamujhari Open-Air Prison currently has the capacity to accommodate 125 inmates.
