Forensic findings raise questions in Mumbai Dokadia Family deaths; morphine traces spark foul play concerns

Mumbai, May 2: Mumbai authorities are intensifying investigations into the sudden deaths of four members of the Dokadia family after preliminary forensic reports revealed unusual findings. Initial examinations showed that the victims’ brains, hearts, and intestines had turned green—a rare change not typically seen in standard food poisoning cases. Experts suggest this indicates a toxic substance spreading through the body, shifting the probe toward potential poisoning.

Traces of morphine, a potent painkiller commonly used in medical settings, were detected in Abdullah Dokadia’s body. Investigators are exploring whether the substance came from prior treatment, accidental exposure, or deliberate administration. The combination of morphine traces and organ discoloration has heightened suspicions that the deaths may involve foul play rather than natural or accidental causes.

Police and the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration are examining multiple possibilities, including toxic adulteration of food, medical intervention, accidental exposure, or even mass suicide. No conclusive link has been found between the deaths and the watermelon consumed by the family, and attempts to trace the fruit’s source have so far been unsuccessful. Statements from relatives and dinner guests are being collected to determine whether personal distress or other motives were involved.

On April 25, the Dokadia family hosted a dinner for relatives, serving mutton pulao. After the guests left, the family consumed watermelon around 1 a.m. Within hours, by 5 a.m., all four began suffering severe vomiting and diarrhea. Despite medical treatment, they died within hours. Leftover food samples have been collected for testing, though the watermelon vendor remains untraced.

Authorities caution that the full forensic report is awaited to confirm the precise cause of death, but the findings so far have sent shockwaves across the community and raised urgent concerns about food safety and possible criminal activity.
