Bargarh, June 20: A 49-year-old man was allegedly hacked to death with a sharp weapon in a shocking incident linked to previous enmity at Turla village under Jharbandh police limits in Padampur subdivision of Bargarh district. Police have arrested three accused in connection with the murder.

The deceased has been identified as Trinath Naik (49), a resident of Turla village.

According to police, the case was registered on the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim’s daughter, Babita Naik (22). The complaint stated that on the night of June 18, accused Jogindra Kharsel visited their house and picked a quarrel with family members. He allegedly abused them in obscene language and threatened to kill Trinath.

Later that night, while Trinath was sleeping behind his house, family members heard his screams at around 12:45 a.m. on June 19 and rushed to the spot. They reportedly found Jogindra Kharsel along with two others near the scene and discovered that Trinath had been attacked with a sharp weapon. The accused fled immediately after the assault.

Following the complaint, a police team from Jharbandh Police Station launched an investigation and conducted raids in the area. Based on the findings, police arrested three accused persons identified as Jogindra Kharsel (35), Sugindra Kharsel (32), and Basudev Kharsel (60), all residents of Turla village.

Police also seized an iron meat-cleaver allegedly used in the crime. According to investigators, the accused have confessed to their involvement during questioning.

Padampur Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Pandab Shabar confirmed the arrests and recovery of the weapon. The accused have been produced before the court and further investigation is underway.

Meanwhile, local residents have speculated that the murder may have been linked to an ongoing family dispute involving the victim’s son, who is reportedly absconding with a woman. However, police have not officially confirmed this angle and are continuing their investigation to establish the exact motive behind the crime.
