Puri, Jul 10: A fisherman went missing after accidentally falling from a boat into the swollen Daya River in Odisha's Kanas area on Friday, as rescue operations continued throughout the day.
The incident occurred near Jagulaipada village, where father and son, both fishermen, had ventured into the Daya River for their daily fishing activity. According to local sources, Prakash Behera and his son, Dibana Behera, had set out in a boat to catch fish in the river before proceeding towards Chilika Lake.
While fishing from the boat, Dibana Behera reportedly lost his balance and fell into the river. The mishap comes at a time when the season's first floodwaters are flowing through the Daya River towards Chilika Lake with a strong current, making rescue efforts difficult.
Soon after the incident, the Fire and Emergency Services personnel, along with local residents, launched an extensive search operation. Rescue teams have been searching the river by boat since around 8 a.m., but the missing fisherman had not been traced till the latest reports.
The search operation is continuing as authorities and local volunteers race against time to locate the missing fisherman.
