Festive rush boosts Non-veg markets in Odisha on Holi

Bhubaneswar, Mar 4: Odisha's meat markets saw a significant surge in shoppers on Wednesday, as the state celebrated Holi. Meat lovers flocked to the markets, with many waiting in long queues for hours to purchase their preferred items. The festive demand for fresh meat products kept traders busy, bringing in a wide variety of items to cater to the crowds.

The Unit 4 meat market in Bhubaneswar, one of the most popular trading hubs, witnessed a heavy rush as Holi, falling midweek, boosted both demand and prices. The market saw an uptick in the sales of mutton, chicken, fish, and seafood, as people prepared for festive feasts.

At the Unit 4 market, mutton was being sold at Rs 800 per kilogram, while chicken was priced at Rs 300. The surge in demand extended beyond the usual offerings, prompting vendors to stock up on various types of seafood. Hilsa fish was priced between Rs 1,200 and Rs 1,500 per kg, prawns were being sold between Rs 480 and Rs 800, and crabs ranged from Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,600 per kg.

Local vendors worked hard to ensure a wide selection of seafood, fish, prawns, and crabs, catering to the diverse preferences of the growing customer base. The festive rush created a lively atmosphere in the market, with both shoppers and traders gearing up for long hours of activity.

While many shoppers were excited about the availability of fresh meat for Holi celebrations, some noted that prices were higher than usual due to the seasonal rush. "We are happy that fresh mutton and seafood are available, but we had to wait a long time in queues," said one customer. Others, however, appreciated the variety, with many commenting that the market had everything needed for a festive feast.

The surge in demand and lively atmosphere at Odisha's meat markets on Holi reflects the cultural significance of the festival, with food playing an essential role in the celebrations.
