Bhubaneswar, June 23: Airfield Police have arrested a doctor from Sanakhemundi in Ganjam district on charges of allegedly blackmailing a woman, extorting money and valuables, and issuing death threats. The accused, identified as Dr. Abinash Mohanty, was apprehended from a hotel in Umerkote of Nabarangpur district following a complaint lodged by the victim.

Police said the accused was produced before a court, which rejected his bail plea and remanded him to judicial custody. He has since been lodged in Jharpada Jail.

According to the complaint, the doctor allegedly befriended the woman after coming across her emotional posts on social media during a period of marital discord. Claiming to offer emotional support and mental health guidance, he gradually gained her trust and developed a close relationship with her.

The woman alleged that during their relationship, the accused secretly recorded intimate videos of her on his mobile phone. Under the guise of love and marriage, he reportedly collected gold ornaments, lakhs of rupees in cash, an iPhone, and other valuable items from her.

The two also travelled to Dubai, where the woman allegedly bore all expenses, including the cost of celebrating the doctor’s birthday. During the trip, she reportedly discovered that he was involved in a relationship with another woman.

Upon returning to Odisha, the victim confronted the accused, who allegedly denied the allegations. However, when questioned further, he reportedly threatened to make her private videos public and warned her of dire consequences, including death threats.

The woman later ended the relationship and demanded the return of the valuables she had given him, including gold jewellery, cash, and an iPhone. Instead of returning the items, the accused allegedly continued to threaten her.

Following her complaint, Airfield Police launched an investigation and arrested the doctor. Further investigation into the case is underway.
