Dalai Lama Arrives in Leh for Annual Two-Month Summer Visit

Leh, June 28: The 14th Dalai Lama arrived in Leh on Sunday for his annual two-month summer stay in Ladakh, marking the beginning of a visit that will include religious teachings, public interactions, and cultural programmes across the Union Territory.

This year's visit comes shortly after the Tibetan spiritual leader underwent successful knee surgery in New Delhi. Despite his recent medical treatment, he is expected to spend July and part of August in Ladakh, although officials indicated that his public engagements may be limited to allow for adequate rest and recovery.

According to officials, the Leh administration, in collaboration with the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) and the Ladakh Gonpa Association (LGA), has made extensive arrangements for the Dalai Lama's stay and the events scheduled over the coming weeks.

One of the key highlights of the visit will be his planned trip to Matho village, where he is expected to confer the Yarchos Chenmo teachings. Organisers said the detailed schedule for religious discourses, public audiences, and other events will be announced separately.

The Dalai Lama's 91st birthday, which falls on July 6, will also be celebrated in Ladakh with special religious ceremonies and cultural programmes. Devotees and members of the Buddhist community welcomed his arrival, expressing joy over his annual visit to the Himalayan region.

Born on July 6, 1935, the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is the highest spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism. Before 1959, he served as Tibet's spiritual and temporal leader. Following his exile from Tibet, he established the Central Tibetan Administration in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, where he continues to guide the Tibetan community in exile.

In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the Dalai Lama is regarded as the reincarnation of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, known as Chenrezig in Tibetan. Revered by millions worldwide, he is widely addressed as "His Holiness the Dalai Lama" and remains one of the most influential spiritual figures of the modern era.
