Nikola Vlasic secures dramatic knockout spot for Croatian team
Nikola Vlasic delivered an 83rd-minute header to guarantee Croatia a spot in the FIFA World Cup round of 32 on Saturday. He smartly converted a perfectly placed corner kick from veteran midfielder Luka Modric to seal a thrilling 2-1 victory over Ghana. This crucial win officially eliminated Scotland from any knockout stage contention. Croatia famously reached the tournament finals in 2018 and the semi-finals in 2022, continuing their remarkable consistency on global football's biggest stage.
Petar Sucic originally gave the Croatian side an early advantage at the 31-minute mark with a spectacular long-range strike. Ghana responded with great energy in the second half. Derrick Luckassen equalized using a strong header from an Ernest Nuamah free-kick delivery. Officials awarded this goal after completing a tense four-minute VAR offside check.
Despite dropping points in this final group stage match, Ghana successfully progressed to the knockout rounds as one of the best third-placed squads. England officially won the group after beating Panama. Croatia secured second place to continue their impressive run. Ghana will now travel to Kansas City on Friday to face either Portugal or Colombia.
