Chennai, May 6: The Congress party, traditionally an ally of the DMK, on Wednesday declared its support for actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, the Tamil Vazhkai Katchi (TVK), in its bid to form the next government in Tamil Nadu, effectively ending its longstanding ties with the Dravidian major.
The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, along with the Congress Legislative Party (CLP), resolved to extend full backing to the TVK, according to AICC Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar. He noted that the decision came following a formal request from TVK chief Vijay seeking the party’s support.
Congress workers celebrated the announcement at the party’s state headquarters, Satyamurthi Bhavan, by bursting firecrackers in a show of enthusiasm.
