New Delhi, May 3: The Central Government has rejected claims circulating online that Aadhaar cards will soon undergo a major redesign, reducing them to a simple format with just a photo and QR code. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has clarified that there is no such proposal under consideration and labeled the reports as misleading.
In an official statement, the Ministry emphasized that recent news reports and social media posts suggesting a change to Aadhaar’s design were inaccurate and creating unnecessary confusion among the public.
“These reports and posts suggesting that Aadhaar will be reduced to only a photo and a QR code by the end of this year are incorrect. No such changes are being planned,” the Ministry said, further adding that such information is causing unwarranted panic.
The Ministry urged the public to rely solely on official communications from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and its verified channels. It also called on media organizations to avoid spreading unverified information.
“People should disregard such misleading reports and social media posts, and instead refer to official updates from UIDAI through its official social media accounts and press releases issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB). Media outlets are advised not to amplify such rumors,” the Ministry stated.
This clarification comes in response to the growing circulation of claims online that Aadhaar will soon undergo a significant redesign. The government has reiterated that no such decision has been made and has asked citizens to ignore these misleading claims.
The statement holds particular weight given the scale of Aadhaar, which is the world’s largest biometric identification system. As of now, Aadhaar has been issued to approximately 134 crore citizens and has facilitated over 17,000 crore authentication transactions, playing a vital role in identity verification across various services.
UIDAI continues to oversee the Aadhaar ecosystem, which is essential for facilitating digital identity services in India.
