Bhubaneswar, July 1: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to install sensors in all major drains under its jurisdiction to monitor the effectiveness of desilting operations. The decision was taken at the 42nd General Body Meeting of the civic body held on Tuesday.
The General Body also approved a proposal to establish a meat waste processing plant within the BMC limits. The proposed facility is expected to benefit other urban local bodies as well and will be set up without any financial burden on the BMC.
The meeting was informed that dog shelters will be established at various locations across the city in compliance with the Supreme Court's directions.
Chaired by Mayor Sulochana Das, the meeting was attended by BMC Commissioner Chanchal Rana, Additional Commissioner Shubhendu Kumar Sahu, City Engineer Prafulla Raita and other senior officials.
The House began by reviewing the implementation status of decisions taken at the previous General Body meeting before taking up proposals submitted by corporators and various departments.
During the question hour, seven written questions were tabled, while several civic issues were raised during the Zero Hour. Members also discussed urging the state government to provide health insurance and group insurance coverage for corporators.
The General Body further approved financial assistance of ₹5 lakh each for all medical institutions functioning under the BMC.
With the monsoon season underway, corporators called for deployment of additional vehicles and manpower for tree pruning across various wards. The meeting also directed TPCODL to rectify hanging electricity wires in areas where Rath Yatra processions will be held.
The BMC and the Works Department were instructed to complete repairs of roads along Rath Yatra routes on a priority basis. Mayor Sulochana Das expressed concern over delays by different departments in restoring roads after excavation works.
In another decision, the General Body approved a 10 per cent annual increase in remuneration for sanitation multitasking assistants, in accordance with the terms of their contracts, in recognition of their round-the-clock services.
