Bhubaneswar, Aug 6: Torrential rain that lashed Bhubaneswar since Thursday night has left Shantipalli Basti under water, with floodwater entering homes and disrupting the lives of hundreds of residents.

The low-lying settlement was among the worst-hit areas as continuous downpours caused drains to overflow, sending dirty water into houses. Families woke up to flooded rooms, damaged kitchens and soaked food supplies, leaving many uncertain about how they would prepare their next meal.

Residents said cooking stoves were damaged, rice and other essential food items were drenched, while household belongings were left submerged. With floodwater refusing to recede, many families are struggling to carry out their daily activities.

"We have no way to cook food. Everything inside our house is soaked. We request the government to immediately drain out the water and provide us with relief," said several residents of the locality.

The heavy rainfall has exposed the recurring problem of waterlogging in Shantipalli Basti, where residents say even a few hours of intense rain are enough to inundate the area.

According to rainfall data, Bhubaneswar recorded 97.2 mm of rainfall till 5:30 AM, while Madhusudan Nagar received the highest rainfall at 107 mm.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rain over the next two days, raising concerns that the situation could worsen if drainage systems fail to cope with the continued downpour.

With more showers expected, residents of Shantipalli Basti are hoping for swift intervention from civic authorities to clear waterlogged streets, restore normalcy and provide emergency assistance to affected families.
