Bhubaneswar, June 30: A Special Vigilance Court in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday convicted a retired Odisha government engineer and sentenced him to three years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) in a disproportionate assets case.
The court also imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on the accused, identified as Kalayanipuri Gandhi Chaudhury, former Executive Engineer of the Hydro Electric Project, Jayapur Division in Koraput district.
According to report , Chaudhury was charge-sheeted by Odisha Vigilance under Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, along with Section 109 of the IPC, for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
After reviewing the evidence, the Special Judge, Special Court (Vigilance), Bhubaneswar, found him guilty and pronounced the sentence of three years’ RI along with the fine.
Following the conviction, Odisha Vigilance is expected to initiate proceedings to discontinue his pension benefits. Further legal formalities are underway.
