Bengaluru Triumphs In Mountain Thriller
Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured their spot in the IPL 2026 postseason after outlasting Punjab Kings by 23 runs during a high-scoring encounter at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium on Sunday. This crucial victory makes Bengaluru the initial franchise to officially confirm a top-four position this summer. Conversely, the result condemned the Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab unit to their sixth successive defeat, completely halting their early-season momentum. Historically, the picturesque, high-altitude ground in Dharamshala favours pace bowlers while yielding massive scores due to thin air, a dynamic that played out perfectly as both teams easily crossed the 200-run milestone.
Batting Firepower Powers Bengaluru
Sent in to bat first on a true surface, Bengaluru constructed a formidable total of 222 for 4 in their allotted twenty overs. Opener Virat Kohli set a solid foundation with a calculated 58 off 37 deliveries, clearing the boundary ropes three times. However, Venkatesh Iyer emerged as the primary architect of the innings, anchoring the middle overs with a blistering 73 runs from just 40 balls. Devdutt Padikkal added valuable late impetus, chipping in with a quickfire 45 to leave the hosts chasing a steep target. Harpreet Brar remained the pick of the Punjab bowling unit, claiming two scalps while keeping his economy rate under control.
Punjab Chase Crumbles Early
Punjab struggled heavily at the start of their response, losing early wickets under heavy pressure. Veteran seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck twice in quick succession during the opening powerplay, sending back Priyansh Arya for a duck and dismissing Prabhsimran Singh cheap. Skipper Shreyas Iyer also fell quickly to Rasikh Salam, leaving the middle order with a monumental task.
Shashank Singh single-handedly kept the chase alive by smashing an explosive 56 off 27 balls, keeping the required rate within reach. He found reliable partners in Suryansh Shedge and Marcus Stoinis, who contributed 35 and 37 runs respectively. A late flurry from Azmatullah Omarzai kept the match alive into the final stages, but accurate execution from Josh Hazlewood and Rasikh Salam secured the win. Rasikh finished with three wickets, closing out the final over to spark celebrations in the Bengaluru dugout.
