Abhijit Majumdar moved from ICU to Medicine Ward at AIIMS Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar, Nov 10: Noted Odia music composer Abhijit Majumdar, who has been undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar for the past two months, has been shifted from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to the Medicine Ward as his condition stabilised, the hospital said in its latest medical bulletin.

According to the bulletin, the 54-year-old music director, who suffers from hypertension, hypothyroidism, and chronic liver disease, was admitted to the hospital’s emergency ward on September 4 in a comatose state. He was immediately placed on ventilator support and shifted to the Medical ICU for further treatment.

Doctors later diagnosed Majumdar with Osmotic Demyelination Syndrome — a progressive neurological disorder — along with bilateral pneumonia, bloodstream infection caused by multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter, severe electrolyte imbalances, and nutritional deficiencies.

Following intensive medical management, his pneumonia and infection were successfully treated, and his nutritional and electrolyte deficiencies were corrected. On September 9, doctors performed a percutaneous tracheostomy to assist with prolonged ventilation. As his condition gradually improved, he was weaned off the ventilator and moved to the Medicine Ward on September 25 for continued care.

However, on October 11, his condition deteriorated, necessitating his transfer back to the ICU for mechanical ventilation and vasopressor support. Continuous treatment led to a gradual improvement in his vital parameters, allowing doctors to discontinue life-support systems.

Despite this progress, Majumdar remains in a comatose state with no significant neurological recovery. A follow-up MRI scan on October 23, 2025, revealed no major radiological improvement.

AIIMS Bhubaneswar has confirmed that his vital signs are now stable, and he has once again been shifted to the Medicine Ward (E6 Isolation Room) for ongoing medical supervision and care.
