57 students hospitalised after suspected food poisoning in Sundargarh

Sundargarh, March 26: At least 57 students fell ill after consuming vada and singada served during a school awareness programme in Odisha’s Sundargarh district.

The incident occurred at Lahandabud High School under Sadar block, where a cyber crime awareness programme was organised by Dharuadihi police under the “Ama Police” initiative. Snacks were distributed among students during the event.

Soon after consuming the food, several students complained of vomiting and diarrhoea. A total of 57 students, including 19 girls and 38 boys from Classes IX and X, were affected.

While most students recovered after initial treatment, 19 girl students developed serious symptoms and were hospitalised. Of them, 11 have been admitted to Mazhapada Community Health Centre, while 8 others are undergoing treatment at Sundargarh Government Medical College and Hospital.

Sources said the condition of the students admitted to the medical college is critical. Authorities have launched an inquiry into the incident to ascertain the cause of the suspected food poisoning.
