Bhubaneswar, June 14: The newly-enacted criminal laws – Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) will be implemented from July 1.
It was revealed after the Ministry of Home held a meeting of DGPs of the states on Friday and asked them to implement the newly amended criminal laws in place of the antique ones which have been existing from the British era.
Speaking to the media, Odisha DGP Arun Sarangi, who attended the meeting virtually, said the Odisha Police is all set to implement the BNS, BNSS and BSA laws with immediate effect from July 1.
Speaking on the merits of new criminal laws Sarangi said, “The amendments emphasized on speedy trial of criminal cases and dispensing justice with protection of human rights.
The new laws also encompass use of scientific technology in the investigation processes in view of speedier detection of cases with more accuracy.
However, he clarified that the criminal cases registered earlier or are under judicial proceedings, will be dealt with under the Indian Penal Codes and prevailing criminal laws.
Worth mentioning, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) got the Parliament’s approval on December 21, 2023, and President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent on December 25, 2023.
