Bhubaneswar: BREAKING! Odisha may witness a warm winter ahead. The winter season in India, including Odisha has started from December and will remain in force till February 2025.
This is so when the IMD outlook has predicted a high chance of La Nina conditions during the winter season.
“The sea surface temperatures are below average in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. Currently, neutral El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions are observed over the equatorial Pacific. The probability forecast indicates a higher chance of La Niña conditions developing around the DJF 2024 season and an enhanced probability of La Niña conditions until early next year,” IMD report stated.
Releasing its winter outlook, the IMD report said, “the probability forecast during DJF (December-January-February) season indicates that during the upcoming winter season (December 2024 to February 2025), above-normal minimum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country.”
As per the IMD outlook report, the maximum temperature during the DJF period in most parts of the country is predicted to remain above normal, excepts for most places in south Peninsular India.
ODISHA OUTLOOK
A glance at the IMD winter outlook on Odisha brings to fore the following conclusions.
- Night time temperature in western Odisha will remain above normal
- South Odisha districts will also record above normal minimum temperature this winter.
- The whole of the State is predicted to record warmer than normal winter.
- Winter will be warmer in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
- Day time temperature in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack will remain above normal
- The day time temperature in the whole of State is predicted to remain above normal during the winter season.
- Some places in North Odisha may witness normal winter
- Cold wave days in western Odisha will be 2-6 days lesser this winter.
- Odisha will record above normal rainfall in Decemeber courtesy depression in Bay of Bengal and an upcoming western disturbance from Dec 27.
INDIA OUTLOOK
- Core winter regions like Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh, North Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and north Chhattisgarh will record lesser cold wave days this winter.
- IMD predicts a 2-3 cold wave days less this year in the aforementioned region.
- Except western Punjab, which will record higher cold wave days and below normal minimum temperatures, the whole of India will be recording a warmer winter this season.
- Both maximum and minimum temperatures are predicted to remain above normal during December, January and February.
- Himachal Pradesh will record higher day time temeparture.

- A look at the above data shows, the country in 90-days long winter season will be excepted of only around 29-30 days of cold wave.
- If the IMD prediction holds true, then 2024 will be warmest winter ever in the country.
