Meteorological Centre Bhubaneswar issues yellow warning for thunderstorms across Odisha

Residents across northern and coastal Odisha face impending weather disruptions as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar issued a yellow warning for isolated thunderstorms and lightning valid through October 6, 2026. The alert specifically highlights the risk of gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour. This warning impacts numerous districts, demanding heightened public awareness and precautionary measures during outdoor activities.

Thunderstorm and rainfall predictions

According to the latest meteorological bulletins, isolated rainfall, covering up to 25% of weather stations, is anticipated primarily across northern and central districts. The yellow warning, indicating a "Watch and Be Aware" status, encompasses districts including Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khordha, Nayagarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Sonepur, Bolangir, and Kandhamal. Conversely, southern districts like Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, and Kalahandi are currently under no specific weather warnings, expecting predominantly dry conditions.

Temperature trends remain Stable

Recent observations indicate dry weather prevailing over most parts of the state in the preceding 24 hours. Puri recorded the highest maximum temperature at 36.2 degrees Celsius, while Phulbani registered the lowest minimum at 17.5 degrees Celsius. The capital city, Bhubaneswar, experienced a maximum of 35.0 degrees Celsius. Looking ahead, the IMD forecasts no substantial change in day temperatures for the next two to three days, followed by a potential slight drop of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. Nighttime minimum temperatures are expected to remain consistent over the next six to seven days across all districts.
