Rayagada, Feb 3: Rayagada district has set a remarkable example in the realm of women empowerment across Odisha. With the support of 12,783 Self-Help Groups (SHGs), over 1.52 lakh women, including mothers and sisters, have united to build a brighter future for themselves. What was once a region with limited opportunities has now transformed into a hub of potential, thanks to the active involvement of women. These remarks were made by Odisha’s Chief Minister, Mohan Majhi, during the inauguration of the Subhadra Shakti Mela 2026 in Rayagada.

At the event, the Chief Minister launched 109 developmental projects worth more than 600 crores for the district. This includes the inauguration of 22 projects worth 238 crores, alongside the laying of the foundation for 87 projects valued at 366 crores. These initiatives span key sectors such as infrastructure development (roads and bridges), healthcare, education, and, notably, women empowerment. Additionally, an investment of 37 crores was announced for the development and beautification of the Maa Majhigariani Temple.

Odisha CM also shared that, in response to local demands, construction work for indoor stadiums would soon begin in all blocks of the district. Plans are also underway to strengthen the district’s infrastructure in education, healthcare, and transportation. A proposal for a medical college in Rayagada is under active consideration by the state government.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister highlighted the significant strides made in empowering women. He revealed that 4,217 SHGs in Rayagada received loans amounting to nearly 200 crores in the 2025-26 financial year. Furthermore, 9,335 SHGs benefited from a revolving fund of 14 crores, while 164 women-led groups were provided with a Community Investment Fund (CIF) worth 53.14 crores. Additionally, 4,195 SHGs were granted 37.55 crores to advance livelihood programs.

The Chief Minister also announced a special allocation of 50,000 crores in the 2026-27 central budget for women and children, focusing on empowering women through self-help and entrepreneurial initiatives at the grassroots level.

Further applauding the achievements of women in the state, Majhi emphasized that women have now become leaders in various sectors of development. He noted that the active participation of SHG women in rural development is pivotal to Odisha’s overall growth. Expressing confidence in the future, he said that Odisha would emerge as a developed state where every mother could proudly say, "I have contributed to the progress of Odisha."

Addressing the crowd, the Chief Minister also highlighted Rayagada as a unique center of indigenous culture and heritage. He stated that the district is asserting its place as a leader in preserving its traditions, natural resources, and beauty.

Under the current government, Majhi mentioned that Odisha has allocated 688 crores for the development of tribals, which includes investments in education, healthcare, livelihood, security, and forest rights. Additionally, he pointed to the significant industrial developments in the region, with major investments from companies like Hindalco, Vedanta, and Utkal Alumina. These projects are expected to transform Rayagada into a modern industrial hub, offering ample employment opportunities to local youth.

The Chief Minister assured that priority would be given to local youth in these industries, as they are seen as the key to the region’s prosperity. He stressed that if the local youth do not benefit from these opportunities, "who will?"

During the event, local lawmakers commended the Chief Minister’s steadfast leadership, recognizing his role in driving Odisha’s development. They highlighted improvements across various sectors, including education, healthcare, irrigation, and agriculture. They expressed optimism that Rayagada would continue to thrive under his guidance. The District Collector, Mr. Ashutosh Kulkarni, welcomed the gathering, and the Chief Development Officer, Mr. Akshay Kumar Khemundu, offered his thanks.

The transformation of Rayagada, driven by women and supported by strong leadership, marks the beginning of a new chapter in Odisha’s development journey.
