IMD forecasts rain and thunderstorms in Odisha for the next five days

Bhubaneswar, September 17: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Warning for several districts across Odisha, urging residents to remain alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next five days.

The latest Midday Weather Bulletin from the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar highlights that while the southwest monsoon is gradually retreating from northern India, Odisha continues to experience weather conditions.

In the last 24 hours, the state saw widespread light to moderate rainfall, with several interior districts receiving heavy showers. Bhuban (Dhenkanal), Tikabali (Kandhamal), and Nawana (Mayurbhanj) recorded the highest rainfall, each measuring 7 cm. Other areas such as Balisankara (Sundargarh), Telkoi (Keonjhar), and Jujumura (Sambalpur) also experienced significant rainfall, ranging between 5-6 cm.

Forecast and Warnings

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places across Odisha for the coming week.

A Yellow Warning is in effect from September 18 to September 22. The warning indicates that thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are likely to occur at one or two locations in multiple districts.

Sept 18-20: The warning is in effect for coastal districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, and Ganjam, as well as Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Sundargarh.

Sept 21-22: The warning extends to include interior districts such as Dhenkanal, Angul, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.

No warnings are currently in place for September 23-24. The weather outlook for these dates suggests little to no change in the overall weather pattern.

The IMD has advised the public to exercise caution during thunderstorms, avoid seeking shelter under trees, and remain indoors when possible to stay safe.
