Local farmers earn global recognition through direct vegetable shipments abroad.

Agriculture in Odisha has entered an exciting new era. For the first time, fresh garlic and French beans grown in the hardworking fields of Kalahandi and Nabarangpur have reached the international markets of Dubai. This 1,000 kg consignment, which took off from Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar, represents a massive leap for local farmer collectives and the state's economy.

While Odisha has a rich history of farming, this shipment is unique because it establishes a structured, direct link between local Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and global buyers. Along with the landmark garlic and beans, the cargo included a variety of produce such as papaya, ivy gourd, pointed gourd, and baby potatoes. This successful export proves that small-scale farmers from regions often considered economically backward can meet the world's strictest quality and traceability standards.

The success of this pilot project is the result of a powerful collaborative effort. The Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment joined forces with APEDA and the Gates Foundation to provide the necessary framework. A major catalyst in this journey was the agri-startup Villa Mart, which received specialized incubation support from Palladium Consulting India. Together, they navigated the complex world of export licenses, international certifications, and logistics.

Kalahandi and Nabarangpur are now firmly on the global trade map. By adopting modern quality checks, these farmers ensured their produce was ready for the competitive tables of Dubai. This milestone is perfectly timed, as the state government is currently drafting a new Agri Export Policy. The initiative aims to connect more local growers to international markets, ensuring higher incomes and better livelihoods for farming families across the state.

As industry experts noted during the dispatch, this is more than just a single shipment; it is a strategic shift. By moving from local sales to international trade, Odisha is positioning itself as a reliable hub for high-quality fresh produce.
