Baripada, Dec 19: In a clear breach of the law, a kangaroo court was allegedly convened in a village under Bangiriposi police station limits in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, where a couple was tied to a tree and subjected to public “trial.” Photographs of the incident have gone viral on social media, drawing widespread condemnation.

According to sources, the woman involved is married and had reportedly gone missing with her male friend for two days. After they returned, villagers allegedly detained the pair and organised an informal village court. During the proceedings, both the man and the woman were tied to a tree as part of the punishment.

On receiving information, Bangiriposi police rushed to the spot and rescued the couple, later bringing them to the police station. The families of both individuals have been summoned for questioning.

Bangiriposi IIC Birendra Senapati said that neither the man nor the woman has filed a complaint so far. He described the incident as completely illegal and assured that appropriate legal action would be taken against those involved in organising the kangaroo court.
