New Delhi, Nov 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for Johannesburg, South Africa, on Friday to attend the first-ever G20 summit held on the African continent. The summit, taking place from November 21 to 23, will focus on key issues relevant to India and the Global South, with PM Modi set to engage in discussions with world leaders on a range of global challenges.

This summit marks the fourth consecutive G20 meeting hosted by the Global South, following the presidencies of Indonesia in 2022, India in 2023, and Brazil in 2024. The G20 forum, which includes the world's major economies, accounts for 85% of global GDP and 75% of international trade.

PM Modi's visit to South Africa is significant as it is his fourth official trip to the country. He previously visited South Africa in 2016 for a bilateral visit and attended two BRICS summits in 2018 and 2023.

In a statement, Sudhakar Dalela, Secretary (ER) of the Ministry of External Affairs, emphasized the importance of the G20 as a platform for advancing issues of global significance. He noted that past G20 sessions have seen the adoption of consensus declarations and the initiation of new programs focused on the challenges facing the Global South. "We are happy that discussions on these issues have continued under the leadership of Brazil and South Africa, and that the concerns of the Global South are being prominently addressed," Dalela said.

South Africa, which is hosting the summit, has set a theme of "Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability" for its presidency. The country has outlined four key priorities for the summit, and several significant achievements have already been made across various tracks throughout the year.

Secretary Dalela also mentioned that India and South Africa share a strong partnership, built on three pillars: political cooperation, economic ties, and people-to-people exchanges. Notably, the African Union, which became a permanent member of the G20 during India's 2023 presidency, will play a crucial role in shaping the summit's agenda.

On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders, with arrangements currently being made to organize these discussions.
