Mahakalapada, Sept 22: The 184-year-old lighthouse and the Hukitola monument in Kendrapara district of Odisha need renovation. The towering lighthouse in the seaside village of Batighar in Mahakalpada block is surrounded by pleasant natural beauty. The tourism department in 2016 included it in the tourist map of the state. However, no significant initiatives have been taken to attract tourist footfall to the century-old colonial structure. The mangrove forest, creeks, and beaches near the lighthouse are losing their significance due to administrative apathy. Though a blueprint was made for the development of the historic structure, the coastal regulation zone law is yet to give its nod to go ahead. The Ministry of ports, shipping, and waterways has identified 65 lighthouse sites to be developed into tourist spots. Six lighthouse sites of Odisha were in the project including the Hukitola monument in Kendrapara. Construction of this lighthouse was started on December 6, 1836, and completed on October 16, 1837. The 125 feet structure has 138 steps made of cement concrete and a 16-step ladder to reach the top. On October 16, 1837, the first light came out from this lighthouse. This lighthouse was built by Mr. H.Wright. This is a six-storied building having space to take rest on each floor with a big window. There are 16 Bullet proof glasses attached to the top floor. This Light House is open for Tourists from 7.00 am to 10 am and 4 pm to evening.
