Athletes battle freezing temperatures for glory in Ladakh edition

Grandeur and sporting spirit took centre stage in the Himalayas as the sixth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games 2026 officially commenced in Leh, Ladakh. Organized by the Union Territory’s Department of Youth Services and Sports, the event promises a week of high-altitude athletic prowess.

Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavindra Gupta, graced the opening ceremony as the Chief Guest, formally declaring the games open at the NDS Stadium. The venue came alive with a vibrant cultural programme that showcased the rich heritage of the region, setting a festive tone for the days ahead.

High-Octane Action on Day One

Spectators were treated to an adrenaline-pumping display of skill right from the start. The opening day featured a scheduled ice hockey match where skaters showcased impressive agility and speed. A major highlight of this year’s edition is the technological upgrade; for the first time, ice hockey matches are being played on the Artificial Ice Rink at the NDS Stadium.

Venues and Schedule

Competition is split across two key locations to accommodate different disciplines. While the NDS Sports Complex is hosting Ice Hockey and Short Track events, the Long Track speed skating events are taking place at the scenic Gupuk Pond.

Teams from across the nation, including Maharashtra, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and Jammu & Kashmir, have arrived to compete. The services are well-represented by the ITBP and the Indian Army. Among the 21 participating states and Union Territories, Haryana has sent the largest contingent with 62 athletes, followed closely by Himachal Pradesh (55) and host Ladakh (52).

Challenges and Rewards

Running until January 26, 2026, this event serves as a true test of endurance. Athletes and support staff must navigate sub-zero temperatures and low oxygen levels characteristic of Leh’s high altitude. This is the second major event on the sports calendar following the Beach Games in Diu earlier this month.

Participants are vying for a total of 17 gold medals in this leg of the Khelo India Winter Games 2026, with 15 of those specifically allocated for ice skating categories.
