Daspalla, Ap 8: Odisha’s first open-air theatre folk drama, the historic Lanka Podi Yatra of Daspalla, successfully concluded its main event, marking the 224th year of this centuries-old tradition. The festival seamlessly blends history and cultural heritage, drawing thousands of spectators who enjoyed daily performances based on Lord Sri Ram’s leelas.

During the mela, actors observing ritual vows showcased Ravana Vadh and other Ramayan episodes on stage, captivating audiences with their dedication and artistry. Over 150 performers, ranging from children to adults, participated, donning unique wooden masks crafted specifically for the performances.

The highlight of the event was the 35-foot tall movable Ravana effigy and a 40-foot long floral Pushpaka Vimana, traversing a nearly 3-kilometer area across five open-air stages. Traditional music accompanied the performances, preserving the authenticity of this folk theatre.

Audiences gathered in large numbers to witness the dramatic enactments, including Lord Rama using the Brahmastra to defeat Ravana, eagerly awaiting the moment when the weapon returned to Lord Rama after the triumph. The event remains a significant cultural spectacle, celebrating Odisha’s rich performing arts tradition and the enduring legacy of Daspalla’s Lanka Podi Jatra.
