Sambalpur, May 22: The Hirakud Dam authorities have announced that the first release of floodwater for the year is likely to begin from June 1, depending on water levels. A high alert has been issued in this regard.

With continuous rainfall being recorded in the upper catchment areas, the water level in the reservoir is steadily rising. In anticipation of further inflow, the dam authorities have decided to open the sluice gates anytime between June 1 and October 31 to regulate water discharge.

As a precautionary measure, collectors of 15 downstream districts have been issued warning notices and instructed to remain on alert. Public access to rivers has been strictly prohibited during this period to avoid any untoward incidents.

The district administrations have been directed to initiate safety protocols and raise awareness among residents living in low-lying and riverbank areas.
