Every year on January 9th, India celebrates Pravasi Bharatiya Divas to honor and recognize the contributions of Indians living abroad, and to strengthen their connection with the country. On this day, the Government of India organizes large conferences where Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) are acknowledged for their role in representing and promoting India on the global stage. These individuals, living overseas, continue to uphold Indian culture, values, and the country’s reputation internationally.

India has the largest diaspora in the world, with approximately 35.4 million (3.54 crore) Indians residing abroad. This vast community plays a crucial role in strengthening India's economy, culture, and global image.

Why is January 9th chosen for Pravasi Bharatiya Divas?

The significance of January 9th lies in the fact that it was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa. Gandhi, who fought against racial discrimination in South Africa, came back to India to lead the country's struggle for independence. He is often regarded as the greatest ‘pravasi’ and his return to India is commemorated as Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. The Ministry of External Affairs has been organizing this event since 2003. Initially held annually, the event has been organized biennially since 2015.

What is the purpose of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas?

The main goal of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is to connect Indians living abroad with their homeland and utilize their knowledge and skills for India’s development. The event serves as a platform for dialogue between the Indian diaspora and the citizens of India, fostering a strong network of collaboration.

It aims to:

· Build relationships between the Indian youth and the diaspora.

· Expand investment opportunities for both India and its overseas community.

· Facilitate easier connections between the government, citizens, and the diaspora to enable mutually beneficial outcomes.

· Discuss issues faced by NRIs and help address them to keep them connected with the country.

· The conference serves as a vital space for sharing insights and exploring new ways in which the diaspora can contribute to India's growth, both economically and socially.
