Heavy rains and stormy winds threaten Odisha across next week

Weather officials have issued fresh warnings as continuous rainfall prepares to cover Odisha over the next seven days. India Meteorological Department reports indicate that squally winds and localized heavy showers will affect multiple districts. During the last 24 hours, the state recorded an average rainfall of 7.7 mm against the normal benchmark of 10.1 mm, leaving a deficit of 24 percent. However, southern and central coastal belts experienced sudden heavy downpours that filled local reservoirs.

Widespread Downpours And Temperature Extremes

Patrapur in Ganjam district logged the highest rainfall at 80.4 mm, closely followed by Chilika in Khurda with 77.0 mm and Belaguntha with 76.0 mm. District rainfall totals showed striking contrasts across the region. Khordha district witnessed a 307 percent excess in rainfall, while Ganjam registered 229 percent above normal levels. Temperature readings ranged from a high of 35.5°C in Puri to a cool 19.0°C in Boudh. In urban centers, Bhubaneswar recorded 34.2°C with 8.3 mm of rain, while Cuttack saw 31.0°C and 4.6 mm of precipitation.

Coastal Warnings and Escalating Weather Alerts

Monsoon weather patterns along the Bay of Bengal frequently bring rapid wind shifts during August, making constant monitoring essential for coastal populations. Meteorologists warn that gusty surface winds reaching 30 to 40 kmph will accompany isolated thunderstorms and lightning for the next five days. Heavy to very heavy rainfall spells are forecast between day three and day six. From August 11 to August 14, 2026, squally weather with wind speeds of 35 to 45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, will create rough sea conditions. Consequently, authorities have strictly advised fishermen to refrain from going into the sea during this critical four-day period.
