Heavy rains batter Odisha and coastal states while northern Indian plains face severe dry heat

Developing El Nino conditions are causing highly irregular rainfall patterns across India. Eastern states like Odisha face severe flood threats from heavy downpours. Meanwhile, northern cities continue to suffer through intense heat and scattered showers

Erratic Weather Grips Subcontinent

Monsoon rains are acting unusually this season due to a developing El Nino. Satellite imagery shows thick clouds blanketing much of India right now. However, actual rainfall remains highly scattered and uneven. Some states face dangerous flood risks, while others endure intense heat and high humidity.

Heavy Showers Target Eastern States

Moisture is currently pooling over eastern and peninsular regions. This happens because a monsoon trough stretches from Amritsar straight down to West Bengal. IMD Senior Scientist Dr. Naresh Yadav warns that coastal areas will see intense downpours soon. Odisha and Chhattisgarh expect rainfall exceeding 12 centimetres in the coming days. Historically, such active trough alignments over the Bay of Bengal trigger sudden river swelling in Odisha's Mahanadi basin, demanding quick local disaster response. Kerala and coastal Karnataka are also preparing for sustained heavy showers.

Northern Plains Wait for Relief

Meanwhile, residents in Delhi-NCR remain trapped under sweltering weather conditions. Light showers offer little comfort against the rising humidity. The India Meteorological Department issued specific health alerts for the capital region. They warned that uncomfortable weather and high moisture levels will persist for another three days. Mountainous regions face serious threats as wet spells continue uninterrupted. Forecasters warn of deadly landslides and sudden flash floods across Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh over the next week. Punjab and Haryana might finally receive decent showers once the weather trough shifts northwest. Weather experts confirm this uneven distribution is classic El Nino behavior. The phenomenon shifts moisture radically rather than stopping the seasonal rains entirely. Managing water resources will remain critical as these regional weather contrasts continue.
