Baripada, Sept 16: Heavy rainfall in Odisha's Similipal Tiger Reserve has disrupted the natural activities of its wildlife. The relentless downpour has altered the forest environment, impacting the habits and routine activities of birds and animals of the sanctuary.
As a result, the reserve, known for its rich biodiversity, is facing unprecedented challenges. The forest department has taken several measures to address the situation and safeguard both the wildlife and the park's infrastructure.
"According to meteorological department data, Barehipani recorded 183. 896 mm rainfall, Chahala 151.6 mm, Ramatirtha 144.78mm, Naanaa 120.4 mm, Kendumundi 105.41mm and Dukura recorded 100.838 mm rainfall”, informed Deputy Director of Similipal Reserve Sai Kiran D.N.
Heavy downpours have been reported mainly in the buffer and core periphery areas. We are still assessing the extent of the damage. Fieldwork has been impacted, but despite the rain, some personnel are continuing with foot patrols, he added.
On the other hand, the continuous rainfall over the past two days has raised water levels in the Bhandana, Kantakhairi, and Deo rivers, originated from Similipal National Park. This has raised concerns about potential flooding in the area. In response, authorities have opened three gates of the Karanjia Dam to release excess water. With the dam's capacity at 412 meters, it is currently filled to 409 meters.
Sources said, taking advantage of the rain, poachers and timber smugglers are trying to hunt animals and cut trees.
