Bhubaneswar, August 14: A fresh spell of intense rainfall is set to drench Odisha over the next three days as a low-pressure system hovers over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, near the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is expected to strengthen into a well-marked low-pressure area within 12 hours.
Rainfall that began on Wednesday has been steady, and the IMD forecasts moderate to heavy showers across the state today. An orange alert has been issued for Koraput and Malkangiri, where heavy to very heavy rain — between 7 cm and 20 cm — is likely. The other 28 districts are under a yellow alert, with the possibility of gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph in some locations.
A statewide yellow alert is also in place for August 15 and 16, with heavy rainfall predicted on both days. The Met department has warned that persistent rain may cause waterlogging in low-lying areas and disrupt road transportation.
The sea is forecast to remain rough, prompting authorities to issue a strict advisory for fishermen to avoid venturing into deep waters until August 16. Officials have urged residents to stay cautious and follow all safety measures during the period of inclement weather.
