Bhubaneswar, August 18: Odisha continues to reel under heavy rainfall and rising floodwaters, with several areas facing severe waterlogging and disruption. In view of the intense rain, district administrations have declared a holiday for all government and private educational institutions in Sundargarh, Bhadrak and Jajpur on Tuesday.

A low-pressure area formed over the north Odisha–West Bengal coast has intensified into a depression. Under its influence, heavy rainfall is likely to continue across Odisha for the next three days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alerts for several districts, with northern coastal Odisha likely to receive heavy rainfall. The spell is expected to continue until August 21.

Meanwhile, the Baitarani River has swollen for the fourth time, with its water level flowing above the danger mark. Against the danger level of 18.33 metres, the river was flowing at 19.25 metres, according to the latest information.

Several villages have already been inundated, and the fresh rise in floodwaters has added to the woes of residents affected by the previous flooding.

The situation remains particularly difficult in Jajpur, Dasarathpur, Binjharpur and Bari areas of Jajpur district. With incessant rain and rising river levels, residents are facing serious difficulties in commuting and accessing essential services.

The rising water level of the Brahmani River has also led to water entering several villages. Floodwater is reportedly flowing over the main road in Bari block, disrupting road communication and normal life.

With heavy rain continuing and multiple rivers rising, authorities remain on alert as the state braces for further rainfall over the coming days.
