Heartbreaking! Children deny last rites, elderly husband waits beside wife’s body in Odisha

Baripada, June 3: In a heart-wrenching incident reported from Kaptipada area in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, an elderly man had to sit beside his wife’s dead body for nearly five hours after their son and daughter refused to accept her remains or perform her last rites.

As grief weighed heavily on him and no help came from family, it was a group of kind-hearted local youths, who stepped up to give the woman a dignified farewell.

As per reports, the incident took place just a few meters from the Kaptipada market. After the death of Sita Murmu, her husband Bishwanath Murmu waited helplessly beside her body. Despite being the parents of grown-up children, none of them came forward to perform their mother’s final rituals. 

Heartbroken and with no one around to support him, Bishwanath placed his wife's body on a trolley and sat there in grief.

Locals said that he was in deep distress, worried about how he would manage the funeral alone. He had no close relatives nearby and no means to conduct the rites by himself.

After waiting for nearly nine hours and seeing that no help was coming from the family, a group of local youths came forward to help. They arranged everything needed for the funeral and ensured that the final rites were performed with dignity.

With the help of a JCB, a burial site was prepared near Sonapol, and the cremation was conducted following proper rituals. 

This act of kindness by the youths has been praised widely, especially as it came in a moment when humanity seemed missing from the deceased woman's own children.

This incident has touched many hearts and raised serious questions about family responsibilities and compassion in today’s society.
