Bhubaneswar, January 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid homage to noted freedom fighter and social reformer Parbati Giri on her centenary.

Parbati Giri was one of the few women leaders of Odisha who led the freedom struggle from the front and dedicated her life to social services.

The Prime Minister Modi commended her role in the movement to end colonial rule, her passion for community service and work in sectors like healthcare, women empowerment and culture.

Taking to X, the PM said, “Paying homage to Parbati Giri Ji on her birth centenary. She played a commendable role in the movement to end colonial rule. Her passion for community service and work in sectors like healthcare, women empowerment and culture are noteworthy. Here is what I had said in last month’s #MannKiBaat.”

Notably, in the last episode of his monthly ‘Mann Ki Baat’ for the year 2025, the Prime Minister on December 28, remembered Parbati Giri, one of the many unsung heroes of the freedom movement who did not get their due in the pages of history.

She participated in the Quit India Movement at the age of 16. After independence, she dedicated her life to social service and tribal welfare. She established several orphanages.

Born to Dhananjay Giri and Shrimati Devi in Samalaipadar village of Bijepur block in Bargarh district on January 19, 1926, Parbati Giri breathed her last on August 17, 1995 at the age of 69.
