New Delhi, July 9, 2025 — Google has officially launched its AI-powered search experience, AI Mode, for users in India, marking a major upgrade in how millions of users access and interact with information online. The feature, which offers AI-generated responses in place of traditional search result links, is currently available only in English.

This rollout makes India the first country outside the United States to receive full access to Google’s generative AI search model, highlighting the country’s strategic importance in Google’s global plans. The tool is powered by Google’s Gemini 2.5 AI model, which allows for deeper understanding and synthesis of complex queries.

Initially available as part of Search Labs, AI Mode is now being integrated into the standard Google Search interface. Users can access it via a new “AI Mode” tab, both on mobile and desktop, without needing any separate enrollment.

According to Google, AI Mode does more than just summarize webpages. It offers structured, conversational answers by breaking down queries into subtopics and sourcing verified information from across the internet, including Google’s Knowledge Graph and Shopping Graph. The system also offers links for deeper exploration, helping users verify or explore answers further.

One standout feature is the ability to input queries using voice, text, or images through Google Lens, making search more inclusive and multimodal. For example, users can snap a picture of a product or plant and receive detailed, AI-generated explanations or care tips instantly.

The company stated that feedback from early testers in India has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly for its conversational flow and context-aware follow-ups. Users can continue the interaction by asking follow-up questions without rephrasing their original search.

However, Google has clarified that this is still an experimental feature. In cases where the AI is uncertain or lacks enough information, it will default back to the traditional search results, now labeled under “AI Overviews.” While currently limited to English, support for Indian languages is expected in future updates.

As of now, AI Mode is gradually rolling out to all users across India on both Android and iOS platforms, as well as through desktop browsers.

The launch comes at a time when tech companies are racing to integrate generative AI into mainstream products. With India’s rapidly growing internet user base—projected to exceed 900 million by 2026—Google’s early rollout of AI Mode in the country positions it to stay ahead in the AI-first search experience.
