New Delhi, June 24: Google has introduced an experimental AI mode feature in India, available in English through its Labs platform. This new addition enhances search capabilities by offering advanced reasoning, multimodal inputs, and deeper engagement via follow-up questions and helpful web links.
Powered by a customized version of Gemini 2.5, the AI mode allows users to ask longer, more complex, and nuanced questions—queries that previously might have required several separate searches. Early testers report that the feature supports questions two to three times longer than typical search inputs, making it ideal for exploratory tasks such as comparing products, planning trips, or navigating intricate how-tos.
The multimodal nature of the feature means users can either speak their questions or submit photos to trigger queries. Google sees this launch as part of its broader vision to simplify access to information, making Search smarter and more intuitive for increasingly complex and detailed inquiries.
Google highlighted the success of its AI Overviews, which now serve over 1.5 billion users monthly. In major markets like the U.S. and India, AI Overviews have driven a 10% or more increase in relevant query types. “This indicates that once users experience AI Overviews, they tend to engage in more of these detailed searches—and what's exciting is the continued growth over time,” Google stated.
To try out this AI mode, users need to sign up for Labs and activate the feature within Google Search. Google also noted, “While we aim to provide AI-powered responses whenever possible, in cases where confidence is lower, traditional web search results will still be shown.”
