Panaji, June 25: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant asserted on Tuesday that India's Constitution was under threat during the Congress rule, while the BJP is committed to its protection.
At an event commemorating 50 years since the Emergency imposed by the then Congress government led by Indira Gandhi, Sawant denounced Rahul Gandhi for alleging that the BJP intends to tamper with the Constitution.
“It was the Congress that repeatedly amended Babasaheb Ambedkar's Constitution. The Constitution was truly in danger during their rule,” Sawant stated.
Senior BJP leader Govind Parvatkar accused Indira Gandhi of declaring Emergency after being disqualified as an MP for corrupt practices, solely to retain power.
"On the night of June 25, 1975, opposition leaders and numerous karyakartas were arrested, and over 100,000 political and social activists were jailed during the 21-month Emergency. Media freedom was suppressed, and civil rights were revoked as dictatorship took hold," Parvatkar said.
“Rahul Gandhi, who now speaks about safeguarding the Constitution, should reflect on the actions of his grandmother,” Parvatkar added.
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Tanavade emphasized the importance of educating the younger generation about the Congress's historical misdeeds.
“I urge the karyakartas to remain vigilant against the falsehoods and propaganda spread by the Congress,” he concluded.
