Leaders discuss maritime security and strengthening Global South cooperation

Bilateral relations and strategic maritime cooperation took center stage on Monday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Seychelles President Patrick Herminie at Hyderabad House. This high-profile meeting marks a significant moment in diplomatic history, as the two nations celebrate 50 years of official relations.

President Herminie, who assumed office in October 2025, is currently on his first state visit to India. Upon his arrival at the venue, he was warmly received by Prime Minister Modi. Before the bilateral discussions commenced, the visiting dignitary paid his respects to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, honoring India’s history.

Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called on President Herminie. Their discussion highlighted the island nation's crucial support for India’s 'Vision MAHASAGAR,' a strategic initiative focused on maritime security and growth in the Indian Ocean Region. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has emphasized that Seychelles remains a vital maritime neighbor and a key partner in India’s commitment to the Global South.

President Herminie arrived in the national capital on Sunday following a productive tour of Chennai and Mumbai. His engagements in these cities were focused on practical cooperation. In Chennai, he visited SIMS Hospital to discuss a healthcare roadmap. Along with his Health Minister, Marvin Nolan Fanny, he explored collaborations for super-specialty outreach, digital health integration, and infrastructure development to boost healthcare services in Seychelles.

During the Mumbai leg of his visit, the focus shifted to the blue economy and trade. President Herminie met with Sarbananda Sonowal, the Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. They participated in the India-Seychelles Business Roundtable, looking for new avenues in investment and sustainable development.

The state visit, which concludes on February 10, is expected to further cement the bond between New Delhi and Victoria. President Herminie is also scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu later during his stay to exchange views on international issues of mutual interest.
