GE Aerospace dispatches four F404 engines for Tejas fleet
US defense manufacturer GE Aerospace shipped four F404-IN20 engines to India in September 2026. This recent hardware dispatch directly supports the Light Combat Aircraft Mk1A programme. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is actively integrating these high-performance turbofan engines into the indigenous fighter jets. This latest delivery brings the total number of recently supplied engines to seven, following an earlier consignment of three units arriving in August. Company officials confirmed their continued focus on supplying the required propulsion systems for India's domestic fighter jets. They expressed strong pride in their ongoing collaboration with both HAL and the Indian Air Force. Engine availability directly impacts the broader production and delivery schedule of the LCA Mk1A fleet.
Meeting hardware delivery commitments
Production schedules at HAL have faced delays over the last year due to supply chain constraints. Former HAL leadership indicated earlier in April that GE had provided assurances to deliver 20 engines between June and December 2026. While the domestic aircraft production lines remain fully operational, the final handover of fighter jets depends heavily on a consistent supply of these critical imported engines. To enforce timely dispatches, HAL previously applied specific contractual penalties and liquidated damages for past delays.
Strengthening regional defence capabilities
India continues to modernize its military aviation sector to address evolving regional security requirements across its borders. The Indian Air Force has already placed a firm order for 180 LCA Mk1A aircraft to expand its operational combat capabilities. Steady engine shipments remain absolutely essential to fulfilling this large-scale national defense requirement. Both organizations are now working closely to maintain a reliable supply chain to prevent further manufacturing bottlenecks. Timely integration of these engines ensures that the Indian Air Force can smoothly transition older squadrons into modern indigenous platforms.
