Gaza, June 7: Palestinian medical and security sources have reported that Iyad al-Mughari, the Mayor of Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, was killed in an Israeli airstrike. The attack, which targeted a building in the camp, also resulted in the deaths of several of his family members. This information was relayed by the Xinhua news agency, citing Palestinian security sources.
Following the airstrike, al-Mughari's body was transported to al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah city, central Gaza, according to medical sources.
Al-Mughari, affiliated with the Hamas movement, was appointed mayor through acclamation, as noted by the sources.
The incident occurred shortly after an Israeli attack on a school associated with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, where approximately 35 Palestinians lost their lives. Israel stated that Hamas and Islamic Jihad members were using the school, which housed displaced people, as a shield. They claimed to have taken measures to minimize harm to civilians.
Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli army has been engaged in a significant offensive in Gaza, following a Hamas attack on Israeli towns adjacent to the strip. This offensive resulted in casualties and hostages.
