Ganjam launches Senior Citizens’ Week

Ganjam, February 14: In recognition of the lifelong contributions, rich experience and profound wisdom of senior citizens, the Ganjam District Administration has launched “Senior Citizens’ Week” on Saturday. The observance will culminate on February 20 in alignment with the observance of World Social Justice Day, said an official release.

"Senior citizens represent the living repository of invaluable experience, cultural heritage and moral values. Their role in shaping families, strengthening society and contributing to nation-building remains immeasurable," the official release stated.

The objective of observing this week is not only to honour them but also to generate widespread awareness regarding their rights, dignity, healthcare protection and various government welfare schemes meant for their benefit.

As per the release, on February 16 at 3 PM, a “Poetry Recitation Festival” will be organised at the Bhanjanagar Block Conference Hall. On February 17 at 3 PM, a “Seminar and Interface Session” will be held at the Berhampur Municipal Corporation Conference Hall to deliberate on various issues concerning senior citizens and facilitate meaningful interaction.

With special emphasis on health security, free health check-up camps will be conducted on 18th February from 8 AM to 12 noon at all Primary Health Centres, Community Health Centres, Sub-Divisional Hospitals and the District Headquarters Hospital across the district.

A college-level creative literary competition will be organised on February 16 at 11 AM at Chhatrapur Science College. On the same day and time, various competitions at high school and primary school levels will also be conducted under the supervision of the District Education Officer, Ganjam, at designated venues.

On February 19 at 11 AM, recreational sports activities for senior citizens will be organised at the Chhatrapur Indoor Stadium. On 20th February from 5.30 AM to 7.30 AM, a Yoga programme will be conducted at the Chhatrapur Yoga Stadium. Subsequently, at 11 AM on February, an awareness programme on Digital Literacy, Financial Literacy and the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act (MWPSC Act) will be organised at the Rushikulya Conference Hall, Chhatrapur.

The District Administration has appealed to senior citizens, educational institutions, voluntary organisations and members of the public to actively participate in this meaningful initiative. Let us collectively strive to build a compassionate, respectful and inclusive society that ensures dignity and wellbeing for all senior citizens.
