Chandbali, Aug 23: With Ganesh Puja is right round the corner, preparations is in full swing in towns and villages across Odisha, as craftsmen work tirelessly to create intricate idols of Lord Ganesha. The final touches are being applied to the clay idols, with artisans focusing on even the finest details of the idols. In Chandbali, various clubs and organizations are crafting idols ranging from 3 feet to 30 feet in height.
The price of these idols varies from place to place, starting from Rs. 5,000 and going up to Rs. 85,000, depending on the size and complexity of the design. However, the situation has been complicated by the government's new restrictions, which have raised costs for artisans. The price of clay, essential for making the idols, has increased by over Rs. 5,000 due to government regulations. Additionally, the cost of materials like bamboo and rope has also soared, adding to the financial strain.
This price hike has affected the idol sales, as buyers are now hesitant due to the rising costs. Artisans are also facing logistical challenges, with some forced to bring in clay from distant places, incurring extra transportation costs and taxes. The rising cost of paint, imported from Kolkata and Cuttack, has further increased expenses.
Despite the challenges, the demand for these idols is still high, not only from within the district but also from other areas. The craftsmanship and labor involved in making the idols is unmatched, but the rising costs are making it harder for artisans to break even. In the past, idols were sold at much lower prices, but now the situation has become increasingly difficult for both sellers and buyers.
Artisans are calling for government support to help offset some of the financial burdens. They hope that with assistance, they will be able to offer idols at reasonable prices for customers, ensuring that their traditional craft continues to thrive while keeping the spirit of Ganesh Puja alive.
