Koraput/Bhubaneswar, January 25: The Koraput district administration on Sunday withdrew its order imposed a ban on sale of meat, chicken, fish, eggs and other non-vegetarian items on Republic Day on Monday.

The revocation order has come into force with immediate effect after due consideration, said an official release.

“In continuation of this Collectorate Letter No. 93, dated-23.01.2026 regarding prohibition on sale of meat, chicken, fish, egg and order non-vegetarian food items on the occasion of 77th Republic Day Celebration, 2026 in Korpaut district, and whereas the said instruction was issued purely on the suggestion of the District Level Republic Day Preparatory Committee. Now, after due consideration, the aforesaid Letter No. 93, dated-23.01.2026 is hereby revoked with immediate effect,” said an official letter issued by the Koraput Collector and District Magistrate.

For the context, Korpaut Collector Manoj Satyawan Mahajan in an in an official letter issued on Friday, directed all Tehsildars, Block Development Officers (BDOs) and Executive Officers to enforce the prohibition in their respective jurisdictions.

"You are hereby requested to issue an official notification in your jurisdiction prohibiting the sale of meat, chicken, fish, eggs and other non-vegetarian items on Jan 26, 2026, for the occasion of the 77th Republic Day celebrations in Koraput district," the letter had stated.

The Collector had also urged officials to ensure strict compliance, saying, "I am looking forward to your prompt action on this matter."

However, following the order, people from different walks of life took to social media to question the rationale behind the ban with some terming it a violation of the Constitution instead of honouring it on Republic Day.
