Bhubaneswar, Aug 22: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the development of a fresh low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal after August 27, likely to bring another round of rainfall to Odisha.

According to the IMD, this fresh system is expected to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha-West Bengal coasts, around August 25. It is likely to trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall in northern and interior parts of Odisha from August 27 onwards.

Currently, several areas across the state are already experiencing rainfall due to an existing low-pressure system. In view of continued rain activity, the regional weather office has issued an orange warning for five districts—Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Sundargarh, and Jharsuguda—predicting heavy to very heavy showers, along with thunderstorms and strong winds.

Residents in these districts have been advised to remain vigilant, as the downpours may cause waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and rising water levels in rivers and canals.

Additionally, a yellow warning has been issued for several districts, indicating moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning.

The IMD has also warned of wind speeds reaching up to 30 kmph during thunderstorms, posing risks to weak structures and trees. The likelihood of intensified lightning strikes has led officials to urge the public to avoid open areas during stormy weather.
