Kolkata, May 13: West Bengal Police on Monday arrested four Bangladeshi infiltrators from a place near the India-Bangladesh international border in Nadia district.
During questioning, the police found out that the four arrestees, which include two women and one man, had crossed into India illegally about a year ago with the help of local Indian agents based in Nadia district.
A police source said that after entering India, the group moved to different parts of the country and began doing odd jobs to earn a living.
However, after different state governments began taking action to find and remove illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, the four decided to return to Hanskhali in Nadia district. They were planning to go back to Bangladesh as soon as they got a chance.
Some local villagers noticed the four people behaving suspiciously near the international border at Hanskhali on Monday and alerted the police.
Upon getting the information, police arrived at the spot and took them into custody. During questioning, they admitted that they had crossed into India through the Hanskhali border about a year ago. This time, they had returned to the same place planning to go back to Bangladesh.
Later, they were taken to a district court in Nadia, where the court ordered them to be kept in police custody.
An official said, "They will be questioned further to see if they have any connections with banned extremist groups in Bangladesh, which have been active in border areas to form sleeper cells."
Nadia has been in the news for almost a year due to the arrest of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, as some parts of the international border with Bangladesh in the district are very easy to cross.
Recently, Nadia was also in the news for uncovering rackets that were helping illegal Bangladeshi immigrants get fake Indian identity documents, including Indian passports.
